Q: What does "Hsi Fang" mean? 

A: Specifically, "Hsi" means "West". "Fang" means "place". Putting the two together, "Hsi Fang" means "West Place" or "Western". 

Q : What does "Fo Guang Shan" mean? 

A: Specifically, "Fo" means "Buddha", "Guang" means "Light", "Shan" means "Mountain".
  

Q : How does the BLIA relate to Fo Guang Shan?

A: Fo Guang Shan is a organization for monastics, while the BLIA is for lay disciples. They develop in tandem, helping one another, and shouldering the responsibility of educating all sentient beings. Fo Guang Shan is a group member of the BLIA, fully supporting all BLIA sponsored activities. The BLIA is a guaranteed Dharma Protector of Fo Guang Shan, fully supporting the various activities of propagating the Dharma.


Q: When was the temple opened? 

A: It was first opened on June 17, 1989. 

Q: Who is the founder of the temple?
 

A: Venerable Master Hsing Yun, who is also the founder of Hsi Fang Temple's mother monastery, Fo Guang Shan, in Taiwan and the Hsi Lai Temple in Los Angeles. 


Q: Which Buddhist tradition does the temple belong to? 

A: It is a Chinese temple of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. It advocates Humanistic Buddhism. It is open to all people regardless of race, age, gender, language, etc. 

Q: What are the opening hours of the temple? 

A: The temple is open daily seven days a week from 10:00am to 6:00pm.

If coming by bus, take Bus 11. If driving an the 805, exit at El Cajon west (exit at Washington east if on the 5 or 163) and continue to Park Blvd north. Hsi Fang Temple is a three-story building located on the left hand side after the second traffic light.
